I am obviously obsessed with any hair color other than my own... especially a hair color not found in nature. And not too long ago the fabulous girls at The Beauty Department came up with a way to get temporary color in your hair without a huge commitment.

Using soft chalk pastels, you are able to color your hair temporarily. What I love is, you can use more than one color this way... rainbow hair here I come!

I have two spring shows I always look forward to, the Dior Couture & Gaultier Couture shows. Here are only a few of my favorite looks from the two latest shows.

To say that Gaultier's collection was inspired by Amy Winehouse would be an understatement. It was all Amy, right down to the beehive, winged eyeliner, mole and cigarettes. I adore it!

The details are incredible! And my favorite accessory in this show you ask? ... the veils!

And then there is Dior... always stunning, over the top beautiful, but always wearable.

I wish I could look at these dresses close up! I can only image how beautiful they are in person.

We have some friends who moved up to Cloudcroft and they are having a house warming party this weekend! We are looking forward to hanging out... I hope there is snow!

Oh, and this image is from a knitting pattern book from the 60's, Spinnerin. I found a stack of them at a local thrift shop and thought the images were just too funny, I had to share! ... and I love her ski "goggles"!

Bâtiment Building

How rad is this art instillation!!? Any art you can participate in is right up my alley, and if there is an optical illusion involved?! it's over, I might never leave.

The concept is simple, a large building facade is constructed on the floor and a huge mirror is propped up to reflect the surface and it's participants so they look as if they are hanging / falling / sitting on the building. Don't you love it!?

And the artist, Leandro Erlich, does other installations that are amazing. Be sure to check out more of his work here.

I don't normally do fashion posts back to back, but I have been looking forward to the Couture shows all week and they are finally here! So I decided to share some of my favorite looks from a few shows.

Valli's show feels like a modern day version of My Fair Lady; structured and lady like and perfectly frilly.

... of course the peek-a-boo tops aren't so lady like! I guess the average woman might wear a bra...

And then there is CHANEL!! And I am gonna go right out and say I think pockets are in! Almost every model on the runway had a dress with pockets, no matter how sequined, embroidered, or fabulously delicate.

Like everyone else on the planet, one of my New Years Resolutions is lose some weight and if anything, try and eat healthier. And one of my favorite things to do is make smoothies, they are filling and are usually pretty healthy. I have a subscription to Everyday Food, it is one of my favorites, and in this months issue they featured an Avocado - Banana Smoothie. I LOVE avocado so I decided to give it a try.... and it was delicious!

Ingredients:

1 avocado
1 banana
1/2 cup nonfat plain Greek yogurt
1 1/2 cups fresh orange juice (from 3 oranges)
1/4 cup honey
2 1/2 to 3 cups ice

DirectionsIn a blender, combine avocado, banana, yogurt, orange juice, honey, and ice. Blend until smooth. Serve immediately.

Take a Ride

Sunday we were invited to go to the Mesilla Valley Balloon festival. Elaine Thacher the owner, pilot and friend of a friend came out to participate and gave us a ride on her lovely balloon, I'm Bananas II! We had such a wonderful time, the weather was perfect and we couldn't have asked for better group of people to spend time with.

And I have to say, we had the prettiest balloon out that day! Isn't it perfect!? In October we are going to go to the bigger and more spectacular Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, I am pumped already!

Happy 100th Birthday New Mexico!

New Mexico just celebrated it's 100 year of statehood! And I couldn't resist posting this political cartoon featured in our local newspaper, from 1912. I absolutely love the narrative: three territories seeking statehood, all of them portrayed by their strengths; Oklahoma is a farmer, Arizona a rancher and New Mexico a miner, all waiting for lady liberty to sew their stars on our flag!

I love New Mexico's awesome jaunty hat and relaxed attitude. If that doesn't sum up New Mexicans, I don't know what does. And seriously, why don't we make cartoons like THIS anymore! They are literally pieces of art.

I just got Martha's January issue and saw the cutest idea for some bookends! And it is so simple I cannot believe that I haven't thought of this! Simply take two regular ole bricks, bang them up a little ( cover them with a towel and hit the brick with a small hammer, to get an irregular look ) and paint them with gold spray paint. I thought if you wanted to take it a step further and make it extra fancy, it might be cool to try using gold leaf.

DIY Sandwich Bag Wreath

A few weeks ago my little church had a wreath making class and we learned how to make the simplest one ever, made out of plastic sandwich bags! If you need a wreath in a pinch, this is the one to make.

Here are the things you will need to start:

1. a box of 150 sandwich bags (NOT the ziplock kind)
2. a wire wreath ring, or if you are cheap like me a wire hanger shaped into a circle.
3. scissors
4. zip ties or twist ties to secure baubles

Once you have all these items it is time to create a wreath!

Step 1. Snip the very bottom of the bag, we need to make sure it doesn't fill with air when we are tying them to the wire frame
Step 2. Remove that little leftover piece, so it won't get in the way!

Step 3. Cut the folded part of the bag, this will make sure we have a nice flat little piece of plastic
Step 4. Unfold and flatten plastic bag, make sure there are no other little pieces hanging.

Step 5. Fold bag in half length ways (hotdog style)
Step 6. Tie bag onto wire hanger, make a pretty tight knot

Step 7. Fluff and slide baggie down the wire.
Step 8. Continue making your little baggie bows and tying them to your frame and you will end up with something like this!

I tied vintage glass ornaments on mine, but you can put whatever you like on yours. :) and the best thing about this wreath is that it is clear plastic so you could use it year round!

When I was in high school, I took a print making class and LOVED it. I continued in college and learned a ton, I wish I still had access to all the presses, hard grounds, acid baths and all that lovely ink! One of my favorite techniques was to simply draw with my scribe, onto the copper plate (drypoint). It gives this incredible blurry quality to the etching, which Angie has down pat. These etchings are SO beautiful!

I love the double print effect, and cannot get over the details!

Holiday Party Trick

I absolutely adore this Christmas decoration idea from David Stark! Simply take some dry erase markers and draw some festive antlers or a santa hat on a loved one from the past, and when the party is over, wipe their glass clean! I can't wait to try it.

I just had to share our over the top Southwest Christmas decoration. I came home one day to find ole bully here, filled with LEDs. It was totally my dad's doing, we didn't have any of our decorations out so he felt he needed to improvise. Isn't fantastic!?

And the wire "crown" is a creation by my sister, we wear it around the house ever so often, but felt the skull needed a little something.

Long Exposure

I was digging through some boxes of books and ran across a book about Pablo Picasso my mom bought me, and it reminded me of how much I love his work... and his striped sweaters. So I went looking for something to post about Pablo and I found these photos of him, from LIFE Magazine, taken by Gjon Mili, "painting" with light. Aren't they fantastic!

And if you ever get a chance, take your camera and set it so you can do a long exposure, it sure is fun to "draw" with a flashlight or even a sparkler and see how it turns out!

Church Mouse

I am a fan of turning a public, or industrial building into a home. I have seen barns, mills and even silos done up so beautifully you would have never known they were used for something else.

I have seen some churches converted into homes, but never have I seen one so well done, they always look well... too churchy. What I love about this conversion, is that all the wonderful architectural elements are still in place, but everything is bright and a little lux.

... and I love the living area! And since I have the upcoming holidays on my mind, just imagine all the Christmas decorations you could deck this place out with!

Going to the airport isn't fun... well it isn't my favorite thing anyway. I always have two seconds to get across the airport to a connecting flight! I just took a trip, so my bitterness is fresh... but I digress! :) What I do love, are the art instillations in airports that feature local artists or pay tribute to the area. With that said, I am going to have to take a trip to The Miami International Airport just to see this installation by Christopher Janney! It is so beautiful and seems that it would be calming to weary travelers. Love, love, love.

I had a lovely Thanksgiving! My parents were out of town, so Nick and I had two Thanksgiving dinners with two amazing families. I am so grateful that we were able to spend time with them! This year I decided to make pumpkin bread pudding to share. It turned out pretty good! Check the recipe below.

Pumpkin Bread Pudding with Rum Vanilla Sauce modified from Smitten Kitchen.com
1 1/2 cups whole milk (or 1 cup heavy cream plus 1/2 cup whole milk)
3/4 cup canned solid-pack pumpkin
1/2 cup sugar
2 large eggs
1 egg yolk
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/8 tsp ground allspice
pinch of ground cloves
2 tbsps rum
5 cups day-old baguette or crusty bread, cubed about 1-inch
6 tbsps (3 oz.) unsalted butter, melted

Preheat oven to 350°F with rack in middle. Toss the bread together with the butter in a large bowl. Set aside. Whisk the pumpkin, milk (and cream if using), sugar, eggs, egg yolk, salt, spices, and bourbon in another large bowl. Pour the pumpkin custard over the bread cubes and toss to coat. Pour into an 8-inch square baking dish and bake 25 to 30 minutes until custard sets. You can also do this in individual ramekins (I had extra filling). The ramekins bake faster, so start checking them after 15 minutes. Serve the pumpkin bread pudding with bourbon vanilla custard sauce. Serves 6-8.

Butter Rum Glaze
1 1/2 cup confectioners sugar
1/4 cup butter
4 tbsp heavy cream
2 tbsp rum

While bread pudding is baking, make butter rum glaze by melting butter in a small saucepan over low heat, and then slowly whisking in the remaining ingredients. Keep warm until serving over very low heat, or transfer to bowl for reheating in the microwave.

I haven't done a Make Up Monday in a while, so figured I would feature a holiday-ish look to copy. I do my best to try and find the make up to match! The holidays are the perfect time to get a little crazy with your make up, think snow fairy (glitter and sparkles), or Christmas vixen (winged eyeliner and red lips).

This look is all about the eyes, I really like the blue and green combo, it is unexpected and pretty! And as usual I try and feature a product I have used... the Stila Waterproof eye liner, it does not budge... period!

I haven't posted in for-ever! We have had a lot going on this last week, and well... the week before that too. My sister in law was in town, and we drove all over the southwest! We took a trip to Carlsbad caverns and white sands, it was a blast. But now we are looking forward to winding down a little... we have planned to have a very low key Thanksgiving and Christmas, lots of family time, hot cocoa, and good food!

Watercolor & Graphite

I about passed out when I saw these images! Two artists from Milan, Francesco Rugi and Silvia Quintanilla of Carnovsky created this interactive space, using overlapping images in RGB. Fall is my favorite season. The best part is bundling up and putting on all that fabulous fall clothes. I don't know about you, but I tend to get a little lazy during the summer, all I want to do is wear cut offs and a tank. So when fall rolls around I get excited to do all that fun layering! These colors are gorgeous, and I love those felt hats!

More Gold

To My Birdie

I haven't blogged in a while. We had to put my sweet Birdie dog to sleep on August 27th, and I have been just heart broken! She got sick with Valley Fever, it was diagnosed too late and she just never recovered. I didn't think that she would go so soon, she wasn't even two yet, we had a lot to still do with her. She was so sweet and good, and flourishing here on the Westfall ranch. She loved to play and finally had the huge yard she deserved, she enjoyed her self until the end.Birdie, we love and miss you so much. xo

I am still obsessed and when I see anything with gold, I lose it. These lovelies are from Reiko Kaneko, they are a little weird and a lot pretty...they are going on the birthday list!

I love this look! It is a little punk rock and a little sweet. And I have always really admired anyone who could pull off the bleached eyebrow look, a la Gwen Stefani, cause I think it looks sooo cool. The one thing I miss the most about Seattle is all the delicious asian cuisine. And I recently had a craving for one of my favorite dishes ever.... bibimbap. Isn't it lovely! The colors of the dish make me so happy! I plan on making my own bibimbap this weekend, and will probably eat it before I can get a decent photo... so here is this beautiful shot by Jen from Tastes of Home.

Here is the recipe!

Ingredients: (Serves 4)

2 cups rice (short grain preferred)
1 bunch of spinach, rinsed
1 carrot, cut into matchsticks
1 large cucumber, cut into matchsticks
1 packet of bean sprouts, rinsed - (the big ones)
1/2 pound of pork, sliced to bite-sized pieces
Gochujang (to taste)
6 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp gochugaru (red pepper powder)
Sesame oil, to taste
Soy sauce, to taste
Salt, to taste
4 eggs

Method:

Firstly, cook the rice in a rice cooker. Prepare the vegetables. Boil the bean sprouts for about 15 minutes in a soup pot with a pinch of salt. While the bean sprouts are being cooked, you can start cutting up your other vegetables.

Remove the bean sprouts and drain as much water as you can. Place in a bowl and add 1 tsp of soy sauce, 1/2 tsp of sesame oil and 1 clove of minced garlic. Mix well with your hands (wear plastic gloves). Set aside.

Blanch the spinach in boiling water until it wilts -about 1 or 2 minutes. Remove and squeeze out as much water as you can (you can use tongs for this part). Drain well. Add 1 clove of minced garlic, a tsp of soy sauce and a 1/2 tsp of sesame oil. Mix well with hands. Set aside.

Stir-fry the carrot matchsticks for about 30 seconds or until it softens a little. Dish out and place on a platter.

Stir-fry the cucumber matchsticks with a pinch of salt until they turn a little translucent. Dish out and place on a platter.

Now, for the pork. Saute the rest of the minced garlic in about 1 tbsp of cooking oil. Add 1 tbsp of gochujang and stir-around till fragrant. Add in the pork. Add about 1 tsp of gochugaru (hot pepper powder) and stir around till well-mixed. Stir fry till the pork is cooked. Dish out and place on platter.

Prepare 4 eggs sunny side up.

Finally, assemble your bibimbap. Spoon rice into individual serving bowls. Place one sunny side up egg in the centre of the rice. Arrange the vegetables section by section on top of the rice. Spoon a portion of the pork on the rice as well. Finally, add about 2 tsps of gochujang (or more!) on top of the ingredients. Mix well with your spoon. Add about 1-2 drops of sesame oil (or more according to your preference) before eating.

Kate Moss is working those thin eyebrows and red lips! The classic 40's pin up look is always a fun make up look to try out and is generally flattering on any face shape, and skin color. And I had to sneak in another favorite product of mine, the Dior Show mascara, it makes my lashes huge! I use waterproof, it keeps my eyelashes from drooping and there no flaking or run off here! You will be able to swing dance all night and not get a single raccoon eye.

Since I have moved I have been on a postcard kick, sending them to all my friends and loved ones to fill them in on all our going's on. But I have kind of run out of New Mexico postcards to send and they tend to be very similar and I am bored, SO I have decided to pick up vintage ones that I find at thrift stores, and antique shops. And I feel like the more weird and slightly off color the better! So watch out everyone, you are going to get some weird stuff in the mail.

I have always wanted to ride a bike, but I was always to afraid to in the Seattle. Although the city of Seattle was bike friendly the drivers were often not and I am kind of a klutz, so it was out of the question. BUT NOW, I live 2 minutes away from a bike trail and there are no real hills to speak of... so I am saving my pennies to get my self a bike! And because I am kind of a beginner bike rider and I don't plan on doing any thing crazy yet, I thought what about getting a fixie! Nick found Big Shot Bikes online while we were researching and you can customize your bike. I couldn't resist so here are two that I wouldn't mind having.

My sister and I went to the mall this past weekend. Mind you, we aren't big mall people, we are much happier in a thrift shop, antique stores, and the odd boutique. But, with that said, there is the dollar store in the local mall that is full of really gaudy and weird jewelry, make up, fake nails... two wanna be drag queens dream. So Dani and I went crazy and we bought all this loot for 12 dollars, that includes the crasy dragon lady nails my sister is modeling.

Bell Bottoms and Big shoes

I have always loved bell bottom jeans, but they can be viewed as passé, so I generally stay clear...until I saw these! These can be dressed up and if you want to do your hippy thing you can dress them down, a la huaraches and love beads. :) and love that dark wash and pair them with the peacoat and a pair of high heeled shoes? Gorgeous!

The weather is hot and what a better way to cool down, than with a boozy milkshake! We made these a couple of weekends ago and I am hooked!

Recipe:

Ingredients
1 cup vanilla ice cream
1/3 cup prepared dulce de leche or caramel sauce
1 shot tequila (preferably anejo or reposado)
Whipped cream, sea salt and/or candied orange peel, for garnish

Directions
Blend the ice cream, dulce de leche, tequila and 3 ice cubes in a blender on medium speed until thick and smooth. Divide among small glasses. Top with whipped cream, sea salt and/or candied orange peel.

It has been to long since I have posted. Nick, the dog and kittys and I have packed up and moved to New Mexico and it has been a crazy couple of months.
